Our design approach

The overall design ethos will break away from overdone and typical themes of Central Oregon resorts and feature a bold unifying design theme with a focus on sustainability.

  • Design with Natural Step (www.naturalstep.org) themes: The emphasis will be on systems interactions between water use, sewer, trash and composting management, and renewable energy.
  • Clustered Layout: Versus standard American suburbia approach many resorts take, layout will feature clusters, or villages, of residences with a variety of housing types. Small pockets of clustered cabins and lodges for accommodation and lodging. Single-family residences with reduced footprints, no "McMansions" in the wilderness.
  • Variety in Residences: In addition to lodge units, attached central village units, and small single family cabin clusters, accommodations will include cluster pads for sleeping shelters or seasonal tents, with shared outdoor kitchens, and bathing facilities.
  • Employees are Community Members: The Metolian wants the staff to be a part of the community and plans to provide opportunities to live on site. Most resorts in Central Oregon rely on staff members commuting to the resort. For instance, the commute from Bend to The Metolian is approximately 45 minutes each way. Spending 1.5 hours in the car daily wastes time, natural resources, pollutes the air.
